MALE YOUTH ARRESTED FOR CRIMINAL HARASSMENT AND MISCHIEF

Since February 8th 2010 the Shelburne Police Service have received several complaints from women and children who have been approached by male parties and spoken to in an unusual and inappropriate manner.  The majority of the reports indicated the males were usually in a red van or SUV type vehicle.  The males engaged the women and children in brief conversation, which in most cases involved them asking for or wanting to purchase cigarettes.  During certain incidents the males would also make rude comments of a sexual nature.  The police did not receive any complainants that would indicate the males were attempting to lure the women or children into a vehicle.

The actions of the males caused numerous members of the public, including parents to be concerned for the safety of their children.  The Upper Grand District School Board sent a letter home with each Shelburne public school student notifying them of the incidents and reminding parents to be cognisant of “stranger danger”.

As a result of the police investigation a 15 year old Violet Hill male has been arrested and charged with Criminal Harassment and Mischief.  Three other males who were present during the incidents were cautioned in regards to their involvement.

The Shelburne Police Service would like to thank the members of the public who came forward with information in relation to this incident.  Constable Jason Storey advised that with the public’s assistance this case was quickly resolved.
