Between June 13th and June 20th 2010 the Shelburne Police Service responded to 81 calls for service.  A total of 72 Criminal and Provincial charges were laid over the week.

Below are highlights of the calls for service:

Another Impaired Driver Taken off the Road

On June 13th 2010 at approximately 2:30AM, members of the Shelburne Police Service were conducting a R.I.D.E. program on Victoria Street.  A vehicle was stopped and officers noticed the driver had been consuming alcohol.  The driver was a given a roadside screening test and failed.  He was subsequently arrested and transported to the Shelburne Police station.  It was discovered he had over the legal limit of alcohol in his blood after two breath samples were taken.

Charged with Over 80 is 35-year-old Meric STUCKLESS of Stayner.  He was released from custody and given a court date in Orangeville.

Driver Charged with Drive Suspend

On June 15th 2010 at 12:08AM, a member of the Shelburne Police Service stopped a motor vehicle on Highway 89.  Further investigation revealed that the driver was suspended.

As a result, 27-year-old Noman BHUIYAN is charged with Drive Under Suspension.  He was given a court date in Orangeville.

Police want to remind all motorist’s that if your licence is suspended, you will be sent a notice in the mail.  Claiming that you did not receive this notice is not an excuse and you will be charged accordingly.

For a first conviction, the minimum fine is $1,000 and the maximum fine is $5,000. For a subsequent conviction, that is, one registered within five years of a previous conviction, the minimum is $2,000 and the maximum is $5,000. You could go to jail for up to six months in addition to or instead of a fine.

Charged with speeding, drive under suspension and operate vehicle with no insurance is 23-year-old Scott GLYNN of Shelburne.

Police want to remind motorists that driving without insurance is an automatic court appearance, with a minimum fine of $5000 and/or 6 months in jail.

Local Restaurant Operators Warned of Inspection Scam

The Shelburne Police Service in conjunction with the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph (WDG) Public Health Unit are warning all food service businesses regarding individuals posing as restaurant inspectors. Some restaurants and food service businesses have received telephone calls from individuals claiming to be public health officials.  In the call, the person tries to schedule an on-site inspection, requests detailed business and personal information and then requests a call back from the business operator to confirm this information with a unique code.

This appears to be part of a scam as “Routine public health inspections are usually done by WDG Public Health Inspectors” and legitimate inspectors will not normally call ahead to schedule inspections.

Public Health inspectors always carry official issued photo identification and this identification should be requested to be viewed by business operators. If this identification cannot be produced, owners and operators should contact police immediately.

If a restaurant or business has unknowingly booked a fraudulent inspection over the phone, and someone posing as a public health inspector visits, the police should be contacted immediately.
