Warm Weather is Here – Watch for Children on Bicycles

As spring and warmer weather arrives the Shelburne Police Service would like to take this time to remind parents and children about bicycle safety.  All persons under the age of 18 must wear an approved helmet, and if the rider is under the age of 16 it’s the parent’s duty to ensure a proper helmet is worn.  It has been shown that a bicycle helmet reduces the risk of serious head injury by 85%.  All bicycles must comply with safety regulations set out in the Highway Traffic Act.  Parents, please take time to ensure that your children’s bicycles and equipment are in proper working order.   The Shelburne Police Service would like to provide you with the following “10 Smart Routes to Bicycle Safety".

  1. Assure bicycle readiness: make sure your bicycle is adjusted properly.
  2. Always check brakes before riding.
  3. See and be seen.
  4. Avoid biking at night.
  5.  If you must bike at night make sure you are well lit using both head and tail lights.
  6. Go with the flow. The safe way is the right way.
  7. Check for traffic. Always be aware of the traffic around you.
  8. Learn rules of the road. Obey traffic laws.
  9. Use both front and back brakes when braking.  Using only front brakes can cause you to flip over your bicycle.
  10. Stay alert. Always keep a lookout for obstacles in your path such as uneven pavement, sewer grates and doors opening on parked cars
