Police Week, May 12 - 15, 2004
The theme of Police
Week 2004 is Crime Prevention Partnerships - Safer Communities.
Crime prevention is
everyone's business. The police cannot do it alone. We need the
support of every resident in the Town of Shelburne. You can
safeguard your home, for example, by following a few simple rules to
give it a lived-in-look such as leaving lights on timers when out in
the evening or ensuring the grass is cut or the snow shovelled, and
the papers picked up if you are away for a lengthy period.
Parents need to teach children the basics of street-proofing tactics
such as not answering the door when home alone or getting into
vehicles with strangers. Parents also need to set good examples for
their children and help them develop strong value systems.
Seniors are especially
vulnerable to abuse. Ontario is home to 40% of Canada's seniors. By
2028, three million seniors will live in the province, twice as many
as now. They deserve to live in safety. If you suspect a senior is
being abused, either physically or psychologically, get involved to
put a stop to it. Keep a watchful eye out for loved ones, friends or
neighbours who may be vulnerable, especially those who live alone.
