In the Town of
Shelburne we have already experienced several poor winter driving
days for the fast approaching winter. If you are trying to fine tune
your vehicle and defensive driving skills for the upcoming
challenging winter, Shelburne Police would like to suggest the
following:
-
Slow your speed to
reflect the driving conditions.
(freezing rain, white outs, etc.) You do not have to do the speed
limit.
-
With decreased speed
in inclement weather, allow yourself an increased following
distance to the motor vehicle in front.
-
Top up your vehicle
fluids with special attention to washer fluid.
-
Dress for the
weather conditions and carry extra clothing.
-
Carry an emergency
survival kit with the basics of blankets, candles, matches,
non-perishable food, jumper cables, ice scraper ...
-
If you are driving a
four-wheel drive vehicle, remember that the benefits of 4 WD SUV's
etc., are only effective if you adjust your driving to the weather
conditions.
-
Make sure your
windows, trunk, roof and hood are completely free of snow/ice
before driving.
-
Use proper tires -
not all season.
-
Carry a cell phone,
if available to you, for emergencies.
-
Check weather
forecasts and road conditions before departure. If a storm is
forecasted, consider cancelling the trip.
-
Don't enter "closed
roads". There is a reason they are closed.
-
Use extra caution at
intersections and over/under bridges where ice forms first.
