History of the Shelburne Police Service


Shelburne's Police Constables 1897 - 1993

  • William Calbeck served as village constable during the years 1879 to 1880 at an annual salary of $10 plus poundkeeper's fees.

  • Edward Henderson (Ted) took over the duties of village constable from 1881 to 1883 at an annual salary of $10 plus poundkeeper's fees.

  • Thomas Canning was appointed constable in 1884 receiving an salary of $50 per year plus poundkeeper's fees. He served as village constable from 1884 to 1886. He served as village constable again from 1889 to 1890.

  • T. C. Wall served as constable in 1887.

  • George Dean served as constable in 1888.

  • Jerry Brundage served as constable from 1891 to 1906

  • Joseph Thompson served as constable from 1907 to 1909. He was also the truant officer.

  • George Hamilton served as constable from 1910 to 1911.

  • William Whitehead served as constable from 1912 to 1923.

  • Sam McCauley served as constable from 1924 to 1943.

  • William H. Madill served as constable from 1944 to 1947 and again from 1953 to 1955.

  • William McCague served as constable from 1948 to 1952.

  • Edward Ehrhard served as constable from 1956 to 1957.

  • Carman Lemcke served as constable, then Chief of Shelburne Police from 1958 to 1993.
