Phishing:
Recognize it. Report it. Stop it.
One of the fastest
growing online scams, phishing involves the use of fraudulent but
authentic-looking, branded e-mails and websites to lure recipients
into divulging personal information that can then be used to commit
crimes like financial fraud.
Phishing is the act of sending an e-mail to a user falsely claiming
to be a legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam the user into
disclosing private information.
These e-mails often ask for information such as credit card numbers,
bank account information, social insurance numbers, and passwords
that can be used for identity theft.
To
address this problem, Visa, the RCMP and the Competition Bureau came
together to launch a phishing awareness campaign under the theme
"Recognize it. Report it. Stop it."
