Recognizing Counterfeit Currency

If you have doubts about the authenticity of a bill in your possession, examine the following security features:

green dots that can be removed if scratched and glow under UV light
fine line patterns that make up the face and the background patterns of the note
sharpness of the details within the portrait
optical security device (the gold 'stamp' of the denomination on the top left of the bill). The device should change colour from gold to green when tilted and it cannot be peeled off.
iridescent maple leaves on the bill will changed from a faint image to a shiny gold colour when you tilt the note. There are no raised edges.
raised ink on the numerals, portrait, coat of arms, broad bands, signatures, and the vignette of the Parliament Buildings.
Micro printing text to the right of the parliament building becomes smaller but remains clear and sharp.

If you detect a counterfeit bank note:

Retain the note if possible
Record details of the note
Contact the Shelburne Police Service and provide them with any information, description or identification about the person who gave you the note.
