Safe
- Let trusted neighbours know if you will
be away for an extended period of time.
- Install dead bolt locks on exterior doors
and a peephole to identify visitors.
- Ensure all windows are secured when you
will be away from your home.
- Keep your garage door closed and locked.
- Leave some lights on and a radio playing
when you are out.
- Give your home a "lived in look” and make
use of automatic timers.
- Trim all shrubs and trees located near
doors and windows to allow a clear view.
- Have someone pick up your mail and
newspapers when you are away, or have them stopped until you
return.
- Ask a friend or neighbour to cut your
lawn or remove snow when you are away.
- Never leave spare keys under flower pots,
doormats, inside mailboxes, or in other secret places.
- Know what is happening in your
neighbourhood. If you notice anything suspicious, call the police
immediately.
- Leave a vehicle parked in driveway to
make it appear as if you are home.
- Clear your answering machine or have your
calls forwarded to another location.
- Leave a number where you can be reached
in case of an emergency.
- Never allow a stranger entry to your
home.
Keeping
Your Business Safe
- Keep windows clear of signage for better
visibility.
- Keep clutter away from the front windows.
- Make sure the cash register area can be
seen from the street or the outside.
- If possible raise the cash register so
patrons have to look up at the teller.
- Keep the cash register locked when not
ringing in a sale.
- Ensure aisles are low enough to see over.
- Install video cameras to monitor all
areas of the business.
- Greet and make eye contact with all
customers who enter your premises.
- Be aware of people watching the business
or loitering outside.
- Inform police of suspicious people or
vehicles.
- Make deposits often and vary your routine
when making them.
- Place a “Limited Cash on Hand” decal on
the window of the business.
- At night, ensure interior and exterior
areas are well lit, replace burnt out bulbs immediately.
- Ensure that all your staff is aware of
the policies and procedures regarding safe business practices.
