Motor Vehicle Information & Safety

Seatbelt Safety
  • Always buckle up.
  • Adjust the seat belt properly by placing the lap belt as low over the hips as possible. Make sure the shoulder belt lies flat across the chest and over the shoulder. Make sure not to leave any slack in the belt and don't place the shoulder belt behind your back or under your arm.
  • If your vehicle has air bags, make sure to move your front seat back as far as possible to give the air bags room to inflate.
  • Children under the age of 12 should always be seated in the back of the vehicle.
  • Always use a child restraint system appropriate for a child's weight, height and development.
  • Follow the instructions for child restraint systems.
  • Use a booster seat for children over 18 kg. or 40 lb.
  • Never install a rear-facing infant restraint in a seat equipped with an air bag.
  • Never place the shoulder strap of a seat belt behind a child's back or under a child's arm.

Driving Safely

  • There is no such thing as safe speeding.
  • Your risk of being involved in an accident increases with the speed of your vehicle.
  • Always follow posted speed limits and remember to reduce speed in bad weather and construction zones.
  • The faster your vehicle is traveling will increase the likelihood of a fatality occurring if you should hit a pedestrian.
  • Giving yourself more travel time eliminates the need to speed.
  • Allow at least 3 seconds of space between you vehicle and the vehicle in front of you.
  • Always look before changing lanes or passing another vehicle.
  • Trucks and farm vehicles have larger blind spots than cars. If you're driving behind a truck and can't see one of it's side-view-mirrors, the truck driver can't see you.
  • Trucks need space and time to slow down and stop, try and give them advance warning of your intention to stop or change lanes.
